February 2022 Newsletter

Happy February! We're excited to share some great events and programs with you this month.
 
Youth (Ages 0-18): Spring reading for children, tweens, and teens starts this month and runs through April 23 - Read to earn prizes at 6 and 12 hours completed! Homework help for grades K-8 with teen volunteers continues on Wednesdays, Farmer Minor brings Daisy the Pig and the pugs for story time on February 8, and bilingual/Spanish story time returns on February 26. Tweens can join the graphic novel book club on February 8, reading The Sand Warrior by Mark Siegel, this month or sign up to create a work of neo-Expressionist art inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat on February 22 while teens can show off their moves in a Just Dance tournament on February 2 or put together a terrarium on February 23. This month's take home kits are Valentine's Day Oreo Cookie Bark (Children, February 14-19), Zoo Mystery (Tweens and Teens, February 1-5), Chocolate Taste Test (Tweens, February 15-19), and Brownie Taste Test (Teens, February 15-19). Adults: In recognition of Black History Month, we are holding an all-ages writing and artwork contest based on quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through February 19; please see safetyharborlibrary.com for more information. We are hosting the New England folk music duo, Andy & Judy, on February 17 and welcoming back the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society, who will be holding workshops on February 1 and 15 and a jam session on February 23 at the library - we have ukuleles available for check out! You can also link up with the Safety Harbor Public Library Foundation on February 5 for their mini-golf pub crawl, Links for Our Library, featuring local businesses. CrAfterWork's activity this month is Sand Art Heart Mandalas on February 24 and our Saturday Movie Matinee on February 26 is showing Man Up! (R, 2015) starring Lake Bell and Rory Kinnear.

Black History Month Writing & Artwork Contest

From now through February 19, commemorate Black History Month by submitting a short essay, poem, or artwork based on a selected quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This contest is open to all ages with one winner per age category. Winners will receive a $50 gift card or a donation to a non-profit charity of their choice. For more information, please visit safetyharborlibrary.com.

Andy & Judy New England Folk Duo

All are welcome to a free concert with New England folk duo Andy & Judy on Thursday, February 17, 6:30 pm at the Safety Harbor Public Library. The Massachusetts based duo has performed together since 2009, producing seven albums. Featured on popular folk music radio shows, Andy and Judy Daigle, find inspiration for their music from the sometimes chaotic, sometimes breathtaking, but always interesting world around us.
 
The performance will include original songs including traditional folk, roots music, country swing and bluegrass, using guitars, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, and other traditional instruments. Beautiful stories are told through their songs – many of which are based on historical events, times, or places.

Links for Our Library

The Safety Harbor Library Foundation announces the 3rd annual Links for Our Library Mini-Golf Pub & Business Crawl, presented by Southern Life Realty, on Saturday, February 5, 2022, from 2:00 - 8:00 pm, with a 19th Hole After Party at Harbor Bar at beginning at 6PM. 
 
The event features more than 20 unique mini-golf holes hosted by downtown Safety Harbor businesses, designed to reflect each establishment’s personality. Career Online High School

Safety Harbor Public Library participates in the Career Online High School (COHS) program which offers adults (19 and older) the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online. The library’s program offers a limited number of scholarships to qualified adult learners who are looking to advance their careers, prepare for workforce entry, and continue their education.
Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age 19 or older
  • Pinellas County Resident
  • PPLC library cardholder in good standing or willing to apply for a library card
  • At least one year of high school already completed
