January 2022 Newsletter

Happy New Year! Start it off right with your Safety Harbor Public Library.

Youth (Ages 0-18): This month, get creative in-person while painting a colorful panda (ages 9-12; January 11), read to a trained therapy dog (ages 8 and under; January 15), sign up for homework help from teen volunteers (grades K-8; January 19 and 26), learn some Spanish during Bilingual/Spanish Story Time (ages 8 and under; January 22), and get gourmet with an individual charcuterie box (ages 13-18; January 12). This month’s Take Home Kits are a Cookie Taste Test Challenge (ages 9-12 and ages 13-18; January 4-8) and Wild About Art - 3D Polar Bear (ages 4-8; January 24). The whole family is invited for a Ukulele Sing-a-Long in the Art Park on January 8 and an all ages self-defense class on January 26.

Adults: Head over to the Safety Harbor Community Center on January 14 for the Safety Harbor Public Library Foundation’s annual Casino Night fundraiser - Grease is the word! In-person programs include Easy Ways to Boost Your Brain Power on January 13; a Saturday Movie Matinee showing of Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, directed by Morgan Neville, on January 22; and CrAfterWork, making a Hot Cocoa Cross Stitch, on January 27. For everyone this month, we have an all-ages self-defense class on January 26 and Bookopoly, an all-ages winter reading program,which runs through January 31.

Casino Night

Mark your calendars for Friday, January 14, 2022, 6:30 to 10:00 pm to attend Grease is the Word – Casino Night, the Library Foundation’s fundraiser for the 20/20 Vision – Let’s Build a Story Capital Campaign. Dust off your leather jackets, poodle skirts, or come as you are to the Safety Harbor Community Center, 650 9th Ave South. Gaming tables open at 7:00 pm, doors open at 6:30 PM.

The evening includes casino games provided by Casino Party Planners, prizes, dancing music by DJ Les N’ More, silent auction items, a 50/50 raffle, and hors d'oeuvres by Stuffed Mushroom. Beer and wine available. Tickets are $50 in advance online; https://casinonight2022.eventbrite.com, at the Library (cash/check), or $55 at the door.

Bookopoly

A fun reading challenge based on the beloved game of Monopoly, available from December 1 to January 31 and open to all ages. Pick up (or print out) a game board to read your way around the Bookopoly board, collecting properties as you go! Download the Beanstack app or visit safetyharborlibrary.beanstack.com.

All-ages Self Defense Workshop Wednesday, January 26, 6:00pm Wear comfortable clothing!

All-Ages Self Defense Class

Everyone is welcome to join us on Wednesday, January 26 at 6:00 pm to learn how to protect and defend yourself with Shihan Walter Evans School of Survival. Wear comfortable clothing!

Career Online High School

Safety Harbor Public Library participates in the Career Online High School (COHS) program which offers adults (19 and older) the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and career certificate online. The library’s program offers a limited number of scholarships to qualified adult learners who are looking to advance their careers, prepare for workforce entry, and continue their education.
Eligibility Criteria:

Age 19 or older
Pinellas County Resident
PPLC library cardholder in good standing or willing to apply for a library card
At least one year of high school already completed
